Overheard @ Lakme Fashion Week
Fashion Weeks are a great place to catch up on latest gossips and Lakme Fashion Week is no different. It was a ‘first’ of sorts – Amitabh Bachchan coming for a show at a Fashion Week. Yes indeed it was for the first time Big B and his wife, Jaya came to see Nachiket Barve’s show at Lakme Fashion Week. Though Bachchan came to see Nachiket’s collection, few other designers did not want to lose a photo opportunity. I overheard a designer excitedly asking a private photographer, “Did you get me in the frame with AB? Show me. Oh please crop the picture so it’s just Big B and me and let me immediately buy ‘lead picture’ slot in Bombay Times through Medianet.” It was first for me – to see one designer hijack another designer’s celebrity guest and encash on it. Come on folks, grow up!
Few Editors of Fashion Glossies are always busy texting or playing ‘Dumb Charades’ with socialites on the opposite side of the front-row. They hardly look at the clothes on the ramp. Wonder how they write lengthy tributes on collections without even watching the show. A keen observant said, “Oh these ladies think and behave like social butterflies. All they are concerned about is a change of outfit before every show.” How true!
A designer was really pissed off when the organisers disallowed an additional firang model for his show. This model has a business visa and holds a PAN Card but organisers aren’t satisfied and said that the model won’t be allowed till the designer gets a NOC from the Home Ministry. Now that’s isn’t an easy job. I can only blame it on cartels. Believe you me; fashion industry here is fraught with camps and cartels.
‘Bangkok Boy’ is indeed the latest fad amongst the high-society types. No, I ain’t talking about Ladyboys that you see in Pattaya or Patpong. I am talking about IVF Babies, which I love to define as ‘Bespoke Baby’ as Couture is what’s the buzz these days.
The craze for a male child is not only amongst the poor and backward villagers. It’s in fact at a more obsessive level amongst the richie-rich kinds who a want a male child at any cost. They have found the easiest way out – a IVF Baby, a IVF Boy and the best place to get it done is Bangkok.
Tanisha and Robbie are true trend-setters, at least when it comes to ‘Bangkok Boy’. They were one of the first to go the IVF way to have a male child. Recently i discovered at least four couples who went to Bangkok and got a male baby through IVF. Amit and Divya Burman and Gauri and Vidhur Talwar are the latest benefactors of IVF to beget a Boy, a ‘Bangkok Boy’
God, what will happen to the country’s sex ratio? It’s literally Raining Men! For every 1000 males, it would be something like 400 females probably. Where the hell is this society heading? I can still understand the ignorant and uneducated couples obsessed about a male child but what explains this craze amongst phoren educated, super-rich couples???
Socialite turns Designer
Good lord, when will we stop aping the West. Now that the socialites are turning designers in the west can the desi socialite be far off? NEVER! Joining the likes of Victoria Beckham and Liz Hurley, Ramona has turned designer too. Yes our good ole Ramona Garware nee Vadera nee Narang has turned into a designer and launching her Spring/Summer 2010 collection at Aza on Friday the 19th (13th would had been apt coz I am sure if the collection is genuinely designed by our lady, it would be horrific).
Most likely she will bring her own wardrobe, rehashed as her own designs. And knowing the crazy lunching-ladies of Delhi, madam Ramona will do brisk business. Hope she sells Botox injections with her ensembles because those saggy derriere and bust(ier) would need a jab to firm up and look good in Ramona’s designs a-la- Ramona-ishtyle (which means lots of cleavage and lots of thighs). What I fear the most is that soon Ramona Narang will be sought after for Grand Finale shows at Fashion Weeks. Mark my words!
