Latino popstar – Enrique Iglesias performed in Colombo on the 20th of December as a part of his “Love and Sex” world tour. By the way who wants to go for an Iglesias’ gig? Isn’t he passé??? Anyway the Colombo gig had a huge crowd even though the tickets were priced between 5000 to 50000 Sri Lankan Rupees. But what antagonized the Lankan President, Maithripala Sirisena to publicly announce that the organisers should be “whipped with toxic stingray tails” – referring to an ancient punishment?
Sirisena was mad to discover that women threw their brassieres on the stage and thronged to kiss Enrique Iglesias. “This is most uncivilised behaviour that goes against our culture,” he told a public meeting. “I don’t advocate that these uncivilised women who removed their brassieres should be beaten with toxic stingray tails, but those who organised such an event should be.” Whipping with the tails of stingrays was reportedly a punishment reserved for hardened criminals in medieval Sri Lanka,
The President’s reaction to female sexuality was strongly criticized but the organizers or Enrique Iglesias haven’t yet made any comment on Prez’s Talibani diktat.
