The 2nd day at Delhi Couture Week I got to see some real couture. One from a relatively new star – Gaurav Gupta and the other from the maestro – Rohit Bal. Gaurav Gupta has been doing drapes since he entered the industry. I didn’t quiet like his Pret Fall 2010 collection where drapes were like forced upon the garments. But with his Couture Collection, I saw Gaurav evolve. His gowns were beautiful and the way he used the swan motif was interesting. His pre-pleated and draped saris are gonna be hotsellers. His tasseled gown, his black one-shoulder gown with puff-ball kinda bottom and his showstopper showed his creative genius.Gudda probably showcased one his best ever collection. His mulmul kurtas, his exquisitely tailored and textured long jackets, his rose appliqued gowns and dynasty shoulders, were simply mind blowing. There was nothing OTT. No heavy embroidery, no glitter and bling yet it was Minimalistically Opulent. I know it’s an oxymoron but that’s the only way I can describe Gudda’s beautiful creations. And no drama at Rohit Bal’s show? No that’s ain’t possible. His models walked into the pool in off-white tunics that floated and looked like huge lotuses. Gudda too walked in to deafening applause.

Fashion Politics is Hotting Up as FDCI Re-Elects its Board
Post the attempted split of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) a couple of years back when a splinter group broke-off to start the Delhi Fashion Week, it is election time again in FDCI. On February 28th, the Election for the new Board will take-place and from what I heard at the Diesel Party […]

FASHION’S ULTIMATE SHOWMAN – ROHIT BAL
Indian Cinema’s once-upon-a-time Showman – Subhash Ghai faded out and is no more successful in pulling in the audience for his movie but Indian fashion’s ultimate showman – Rohit Bal weaves his magic and cast his spell every time. Rohit Bal’s shows are hypnotic. Their grandeur, their hype and the mad rush to watch his […]
Only Manish Malhotra Can Do This…
I always felt that designer Manish Malhotra is a better Stylist than a Designer. But then in India anybody who can lure in some Bollywood glitz becomes a designer worthy of a ‘Grand Finale’ slot. Manish Malhotra’s Grand Finale show at the Lakme Fashion Week yet again disappointed the REAL fashion writers and fashionistas. In […]
DECADE OF GRANDIOSITY
It was the tenth-year of the India Couture Week and that meant upping the quotient of grandiosity that is epitome of couture fashion. Though even in its decade of existence, Indian Couture essentially meant wedding wear, not typically what couture fashion globally stands for. The week started off with Anamika Khanna’s exotic installation of her […]
My Take on The just concluded India Bridal Fashion Week 2013
Money can buy you big designers, movie stars to walk the ramp, overwhelming ‘paid editorial’ but money surely can’t buy you honest reportage and most importantly – finesse! The debut India Bridal Fashion Week 2013 in Delhi ended on Sunday and the only high-point about this six-day affair were two outstanding collections presented by Rohit […]
Top Delhi Designers Rejuvenate Mumbai’s Lakme Fashion Week
The bi-annual Lakme Fashion Week was losing sheen with not so great designers showcasing their work. But the lineup of designers for the Winter/Festive 2011 edition of Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai seems impressive and being a Delhi-ite I am only too proud to say that the sheen is added by Delhi designers. Rohit Bal […]
Some Great Fashion From The Capital
The past week we in Delhi had a double dose of good fashion. First we had a sneak-peek at Rohit Bal’s ‘Gulbagh’ collection for the forthcoming Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2015 and then we enjoyed Manav Gangwani’s extravagant Haute Couture 2014 show. You can read my take on them in Sunday Standard. Here […]
Prestigious ‘Off-Site’ Show During Couture Week 2012
Over the years ‘Off-Site’ shows during Delhi Couture Week and the bi-annual Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week has assumed great importance as they are taken to be as ‘premium’ shows. Tarun Tahiliani, Rohit Bal and Rajesh Pratap Singh have had the honour of doing ‘off-site’ shows earlier. The idea behind ‘off-site’ shows are primarily to […]
