First lady Michelle Obama, bowed her head in a moment of silence, as Nirbhaya, the courageous 23-year-old victim of a brutal gang rape on a moving bus in Delhi was posthumously honored with the Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award at the State Department in Washington.
At the State Department presentation ceremony on International Women’s Day, John Kerry, the Secretary of State praised the determination and courage of Nirbhaya describing her as a brave woman whose life was snuffed out in a brutal assault
“For millions of Indian women, her personal ordeal, perseverance to fight for justice, and her family’s continued bravery is helping to lift the stigma and vulnerability that drive violence against women,” said Michelle Obama in her official statement.
As United States celebrated International Women’s Day by honouring Nirbhaya by posthumously bestowing her with the ‘Woman of Courage’ Award, Delhi and Mumbai ladies celebrated the day with champagne-brunches, pampering spa treatments and make over sessions!
