The Indian Fashion Fraternity is anything but cohesive. There are factions and factions – Delhi Gang, Mumbai Gang, Hep Block and Behenji Block are the few that I am aware of. One gang is always at loggerheads with the other, which is definitely detrimental for the Indian fashion industry as a whole and I sincerely wish that some wisdom dawns on our designers.
Now I am hearing that a Splinter Group headed by a lady designer (from the so-called Behenji Brigade) and supported by former Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) Members are planning to rake-up issues about the present board’s functioning and throw muck and attempt for the dissolution of the present board at the upcoming Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) slotted for the first week of December 2011. It is very easy to find flaws. Shouldn’t the achievements be enlisted too. I am sure when achievements are laid side-by-side of flaws, the former will outshine the latter. But Splinter Group wouldn’t take that risk.
I know what kind of accusations will be hurled. Most likely it will be about eternal issues on favouritism, complaints about show-schedulings, cribbing about buyers and so on so forth. The problem with our designers are that everybody thinks he/she is justified for the prime slots during fashion weeks, deserves grand-finale shows or the sponsored shows and now that the FDCI has Couture Week in its annual diary, most want to be a part of it too even though they may not have ever ventured in Couture.
The splinter group is also getting backing of few members from the present FDCI Board and one former top executive FDCI. I am sure you now have the inkling of the constituents of the Splinter Group. But the war planned definitely seems to be an ugly one as the splinter group is planning a media blitzkrieg with the help of some leaked Emails (whose authenticity is not verified) just before the FDCI AGM.

This has been happening from the very begining. 12 years and it the same story everybody wants to be on the board. The only way this can change is by bringing some transparency to it in the form of industry stake holders like , retailers, editors, textile manufacturers being opted on to the board to give this organisation some form of credibility and put an end to this constant bickering. The event is gathering pace and there truly is an opportunity to put it on the global map. Which incidentally will benefit everyone of the designers. Time has come to think big. |
I will keep you posted on the developments. But I personally feel all this is a sheer waste of time and disrupting the functioning of FDCI.

THe fdci organised fashion week has surely become one of the best fashion weeks in the world. However its just a problem of this one man who came pretty close to ruling fashion in this country. Since the charge was foiled he is now trying to fund disgruntled designers to go against the current board rulings and then get back to the board within a few years. Hope this man is stopped because this guy hardly knows anything about fashion and most likely in the fashion industry to pimp around/ sleep around.
