Riyaz Gangji – Shameless Copycat

In my decade and half long career as a fashion scribe, I haven’t seen such a blatant copying of design by one designer of another designer’s work. This shameless copying was done by a new name in fashion – Riyaz Gangji. He copied a bridal ensemble of Delhi based designer duo – Parvesh & Jai who showed their creation in July 2009. Riyaz showed almost a ditto copy of an elaborate lehenga-choli in Saji-Wajid’s Music inspired show on the 9th of this month. The pictures say it all. This is what Riyaz Gangji showed on 9th of May 2010 as his show-stopper for the bridal collection. Now see the original design by Parvesh & Jai that they showcased in Bangalore Fashion Week in July 2009 below. Look closely at the similarity of design in the choli and the colour-combo and the embellishment on the lehenga. It’s a shameless COPY.Who is Riyaz Gangji? Well I did some digging up and discovered that he used to register as a buyer at Lakme Fashion Week. Then suddenly last season he emerged as a designer at Lakme Fashion Week. I am sure Mr. Anil Chopra wouldn’t appreciate Gangji’s copying ways. The worst part is that Riyaz bought pieces from Parvesh and Jai when he attended LFW as a buyer. It’s another story that he defaulted in payment and the matter is sub-judice. What a novel way to turn designer, huh? Become a buyer, horde designs of other designers, default on payment and then emerge as a designer buy copying designs of the same designers he bought for his store – Libas. Someone truly said, “Nakal Mein Bhi Akal Chaiye”, which I doubt Riyaz Gangji has!

I don’t see the other picture to compare.

  2. jack says:

sorry, now I reloaded the pic

  3. Anthead says:

I feel sorry for the designer duo who’ve been plagiarized – but good heavens, that’s a hideously ugly dress. What were they thinking when they thought up this appliqué mess.

  4. jack says:

TRUE ANTHEAD, IT’S QUIET A HIDEOUS DESIGN. DOESN’T APPEAL TO MY AESTHETICS TOO.
BUT THE BIGGER ISSUE HERE IS PIRACY, WHICH I DETEST.

  5. Jasmeen says:

What do the piracy laws state? This is an episode that pops up time and again.

  6. Sharad says:

Shame that even celebrities are endorsing pirated copies….The lowest lows that fashion can ever get to………………..But is anyone watching this and doing something ?????????

  7. Sharad says:

Imagine a cat fight among celebrities on the red carpet – One wearing an original from Parvesh Jai and the other a pirated copy by Riyaz ………I can see these kind of confrontations already happening :)…….

  8. Fashionista says:

About Anthead: I think you need to improve on your fashion and asthetic sense first. This garment is very gorgeous and beautiful.
Instead of commenting on the garment we have to fight against the piracy issue.
We should not support or encourage such copy cats.

  9. Ann Sophie says:

I m partially agree with Jack that its about piracy. If Design is not good then Y will some one will copy. And Ant head its really shameful the way you choose your words. I am sure either you are teenager or aesthetically handicapped. Designs are designer expression and we should respect that. I live in Paris and witnessed designed made by Parvesh and Jai which are appreciated commercially and critically around US and Europe. Their color sense is unique and highly developed like Antoni Gaudí. Designs are not universally accepted but that doesnt give right to anyone to use words like hideous and ugly. Apart from the person who copy it know that making these design he can earn money. I advice Parvesh and Jai to file law suit against person who copy their design.

    hi Ann,
I didn’t mean to pass a judgement on Jai & Parvesh’s capability as a designer. Since it’s my blog, I took the liberty of voicing my personal opinion on the particular ensemble. That’s about it. Individual aesthetic sense varies and it’s perfectly normal so I feel you shouldn’t react to individual’s comment.
Yes the bigger issue is Piracy so let’s just focus on it.
    Cheers!

  11. well!!! it feels good to see comments of so many people, but the major issue we should focus here is fashion piracy.
a guy like”riyaz gangji” has so much courage to copy the garment exactly same, even if it was presented before media almost a year back.
this guy did the same when he shocased our garments at Bahrain Fashion Week last year. that total episode even appeared in newspapers and magazines that time.
we had filed case against him last time and even this time, paying ransome amount in court and to lawers. no results…….
we need a strong panel now who looks after all this, and for sure we do not appreciate “Lakme Fashion Week ” to select him among his designers. at least they should be aware.
if this is not stoped then the day is not far when you will see every store owners becoming designers and showcasing pirated collections.
the sufferer will be only the poor designer!!!!!

i think we should not make a big deal about it, if parvesh and jai are loosing business then they should be worried,

a talented designer always moves on and if other people are copying pravesh and jai they should be flattered.

as they say imitation is the best form of flattery.

  13. Anthead says:

Fashionista and Ann Sophie – whatever floats your boat darling. If you are delighted by this crazy quilt, so be it. But for heaven’s sake do not compare this to Gaudi’s work. Gaudi’s kitsch is intelligent, structural and is emblematic of Barcelona. This is just an appliqué machine gone horribly wrong.

As for commercial and critical success in the US and Europe, showing at a trade event does not critical acclaim make.
